• Question: When do babies start remember things?

      Hello,

      That is a good question and the the short answer probably is that no one knows for sure and it is likely very variable. Babies as learning all the time, such as how to walk and how to get food all over themselves but I don’t think anyone knows when they start to remember specific events.

      Great question. Someone else asked when my first memory is, and I can’t remember, because I’ve seen pictures and video of myself when I was really young, so I can’t tell if these are real memories, or just memory of the videos!

      Although as an adult you can’t remember specific events from your very early childhood, babies are still able to remember from a very early age. You can tell this because, as Simon says, they start to learn how to do things, and this requires memory. Babies remember their mother and father very early on, so they must have some sort of memory within weeks, if not sooner!
