      Hi kpringles97

Good question – I’m not sure of the answer so I’ve looked it up.

Apparently other animals have tear ducts but these are for keeping their eyes moist and clean. However, humans may be unique in shedding tears of emotion. Some scientists believe that the ability for humans to cry is an evolutionary breakthrough of humans as a social species designed to convey sadness to others.

Also tears brought about by emotions have a different chemical make up than those for moistening or cleaning your eyes and may be a way of getting rid of stress-related chemicals. A lot of people report feeling better after “a good cry” so this may be true.

I think its something scientists are still trying to find out so if youre interested in becoming a scientist maybe its something you could help to research!

      I hope this helps

      Hi @kpringles97

I think Rachael makes a brilliant point here! If we can’t answer your questions, or if we say ‘scientists are not sure’ this would be a good field of research to go in to, if it’s something you’re interested in!

Also, Rachael has answered this really well, I didn’t know the answer either so I was interested to read it.

      Thanks for the question!
